Day 14: Sat. 12/25/2010:

Woke up -- thank God, did physical therapy, Happy Birthday Jesus! Listened to my favorite Christmas songs on the radio, started You Tube history segments, ate Christmas dinner, talked on the phone to my grade school crush, watched Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, and the rest of the Miami Heat embarrass Kobe Bryant and the L.A. Lakers on national TV, saw a white Christmas for the first time in my life. I managed to carefully walk outside and film rare history. I must admit that although I have spent many Christmas days alone, I felt especially alone on this one because of my inability to get out of the house.

Days 11,12,13 At Home After Surgery -- Wed. 12/22 - Fri. 12/24/2010

Day 11: Wed. 12/22/2010:

Woke up -- Thank God, did physical therapy, met with Drill Sgt. A.W. a.k.a. my physical therapist, she showed me new exercises and we went for a little walk outside with my cane. Right afterwards I was forced to ride my bike (The Spirit of Wal-Mart) 4.5 miles back to the Care Center for additional help with my utilities. It was cold and overcast but I made it there and back with no problem. There was this one mean guy there that made me feel really bad about needing help -- may the Lord have mercy on his soul!

Day 12: Thurs. 12/23/2010:

Woke up -- Thank God, did physical therapy, received more financial assistance from the good ole Salvation Army to pay my water bill. I pulled some strings since I mention them in my Will.

Day 13: Fri. 12/24/2010:

Woke up -- Thank God, did physical therapy, started preparing Christmas dinner in the wee hours of the morning. I would not have much to prepare had it not been for the Care Center who hooked me up with all of the fixings of a full Christmas dinner including a three pound chicken and pumpkin pie. Family -- including dear mother -- is still non-existence in my financial support. They usually come out of hiding when they think that my business is doing well. God bless those Christians!

Days 8,9,10 At Home After Surgery -- Sun. - Tues. 12/19-21/2010

Day 8: Sunday 12/19/2010;

Woke up -- Thank God, did physical therapy, slept comfortably on lounge chair again. Have not had bowel movement since Thursday, will continue to take Senna and stool softener. Running out of food. Family and dear mother have been absolutely no help!

Day 9: Monday 12/20/2010;

Woke up -- Thank God, did physical therapy. My physical therapist was not happy that I stopped using my walker but I know my body's limitations much better than her. Received food and financial assistance with electric bill from the Care Center -- Thank God for strangers that really care! Made a walk in appointment at the VA Hospital in Columbia, SC, for Tuesday 12/21/2010 to have my staples removed.

Day 10: Tuesday 12/21/2010;

Woke up -- Thank God, did physical therapy, had early -- before sun up -- trip to Columbia for my walk-in appointment at the VA Hospital in Columbia, SC. Thankfully I was cleared by my doctor to discontinue use of my walker who also removed my staples. It stung a little bit each time he removed one but I just counted down the pain until he removed the 14th one.

He also let me know that I did not have to suck into that awful breathing machine like I was instructed to do so twice a day -- man I hated that! In addition, he said that I did not have to wear the panty hose anymore, and no more ice compresses twice a day either. I was also able to commandeer a special toilet seat after an intense evaluation which involved a sitting test -- I passed with flying colors. The ride back home on the VA van was quite interesting as we had some very lively characters aboard who reminded me of my old Army buddies. They just kept the conversation going on many different and interesting topics. All and all it was a great day at the VA.

Day 7: Saturday 12/18/2010: Woke up -- Thank God, did physical therapy, slept comfortably on lounge chair again, I self graduated from using my walker, I was finally able to go outside to check my mailbox, no money, gonna have to rely on outside financial assistance for food and utilities. Day 5 At Home After Surgery -- Thursday December 16, 2010

Woke up -- thank God, did physical therapy, bad news on the Red Cross loan -- it is a no go. Started calling food pantries and other organizations for help with utilities. Met with my physical therapist A.W.; she gave me her first order right off the bat as I answered my front door -- yikes! She was sharp, blunt, and direct just like a female Drill Sergeant. She almost immediately started calling folks like my doctor when she learned that I was sleeping on a make shift bed on the floor because my futon was too low to the ground. She taught me the right way to get up my stairs which was to fold the walker into one and use it in front of me for balance and to pull myself up each step -- kool beans! I also received a care package from my good friend C. Smith who is also a nurse. Nothing from my dear mom and great christian family though!

Day 4 At Home After Surgery -- Wednesday December 15, 2010

Woke up -- thank God, did physical therapy, made appointment with professional physical therapist, I am still confused on what I am actually suppose to be doing and not to be doing concerning my new hip. Contacted the Red Cross, churches, and other social agencies seeking financial assistance.

Day 3 At Home After Surgery -- Tue. 12/14/2010

Got up -- thank God, no physical therapy today, have appointment with health care nurse. I learned that you must know your drugs as inquiring minds want to know what's keeping you going. She removed my bandage and that was all well and good because I was afraid to do it myself. She also let me know that it was okay to take a shower -- hint, hint. Friends checked in to see if I was still kicking. Going to check on applying for a Red Cross loan to help with my household bills.

Day 2 At Home After Surgery -- Monday December 13, 2010

Got up -- thank God -- did my physical therapy, popped my pills, contacted VA Hospital concerning my new situation and learned that I was suppose to be wearing both panty hoses to prevent a blood clot. You can not take anything for granted because their are multiple people giving multiple instructions during this process. Some will however take it for granted that you already know what they think someone else has told you before. Sounds confusing I know it does. I also inquired about follow-up services such as my home physical therapist and a hand rail that they promised to build.

I came up with a neat way to haul stuff around while using my walker which requires the use of both hands. I got this idea from being and infantry foot soldier in Uncle Sam's Army. You just use a small back pack to put your items in and that way you will still have both hands free to guide your walker. When it comes food, use one of those plates that you can cover your dish or a tupper ware container will do. Put your ice for drinks in a ziploc bag and walla! You are now an urban infantry foot soldier!

Day 1 At Home After Surgery --- Sunday December 12, 2010

Now that I am back at home it is time to get used to my new set up with all this new equipment and precautions. One of my favorite new aides is what I call the grabby stick; I will be using this gizmo long after I have recovered. I also call it the "lazy" stick.

Then there are several aides whose sole purpose is to help me get dressed. There is a stick to help pull up my garments, a long slipper spoon for my shoes, and a neat gizmo to help put my socks on and special elastic shoe laces that will not come loose so that I will not have to tie my shoes over and over again. Who thought of these things?

I was also given a funny-looking breathing machine to keep my lungs expanded and told to breathe into it twice a day for ten times -- very annoying! I also had to apply ice compresses to my wound twice a day for 20 minutes to reduce the swelling.

Today is my first day alone after surgery and I must admit that I am not nearly as afraid as I thought I was going to be after listening to some folks who had me believing that I would be totally disabled and bed ridden. In fact, I did my laundry first thing this morning. The rest of my day was spent contacting friends to let them know that I was still alive and doing well -- thank God.
